Today marks the 7th annual Small Business Saturday where you're encouraged to "shop small". Shopping small invokes different images to different people. To some people it means bundling up and going to the downtown shopping district. To others it means visiting the local mechanic versus going to the dealer. No matter the practice, here are five reasons you should support small business.
1) When you support a small business, a real life person does a happy dance.
With your purchase and patronage, you're not only getting what you want; but you're also supporting someone else's dream. That's a win-win. Trust us, we know from first hand experience how good that happy dance actually feels.
2) Small business employs nearly half of all people in America.
Small businesses (defined as having less than 500 employees) in America employ 47% of all working people in the private sector. And small businesses with less than 100 employees account for the majority.
3) When you shop small business in America, you're supporting American business.
The 29 million small businesses in America account for 99.9% of all American private sector businesses.
4) Small business is ethnically diverse.
29% of small businesses in America are owned by a person within a minority ethnic group. While 29% isn't even a third of an otherwise diverse workforce, it's still higher than the national average of 18%.
5) Small business is growing.
While it's true not every small business makes it past their first year, overall small business growth is still positive. In 2016 we saw a net growth of 30 thousand more small businesses (each with at least one employee). This means that the small business workforce is growing more than ever.
